Reflection on Pope Leo’s “Magnificent Humanity” Encyclical

Saturday, October 10, 2026.   10:00 am to noon.

Learn, Discuss, Reflect!  Light lunch follows.  No Charge.

Blessed Sacrament Cathedral.  9844 Woodward, Detroit

Join HVM’s reflection on Pope Leo IV’s Magnifica Humanitas encyclical concerning “AI” – Artificial Intelligence – that is so much in the daily news.  What impact will AI have, individually and in our communities?   How will it affect our human values and spirituality?  What do our spiritual leaders tell us?

Released on the 100 year anniversary of Pope Leo XIII’s Rerum Novarum encyclical which addressed the industrial revolution, Magnifica Humanitas is the church now speaking to this new revolution –in which computer systems seem capable of human-like thought, understanding, speech and independent tasks.

Few of us yet understand AI details.  The topic is immense, complicated and rapidly changing.  But Pope Leo, who himself holds a degree in Mathematics, teaches that sacredness of the Human Person cannot be lost for society to exist.   THE INHERENT DIGNITY OF EVERY HUMAN BEING.  The encyclical evokes the centrality of the human person.  It affirms Catholic Church doctrine on

• Common good,
• Love,
• Justice,
• Dialog, and
• Shared responsibility.

Our first session will focus on what it means to be a person and how we can reflect that in our daily encounters.  A reading guide titled Magnificent Humanity, Bill Huebsch author, will be available for $3.00 purchase.
